Football Friday

It is our first football Friday for 2013.  After all the waiting, it is hard to believe that it is time for the games to start.  Last night was a good one to be in front of a television.  UNC and South Carolina was a good kickoff to the college season.

Ole Miss and Vanderbilt was a fantastic finish.  I still like Coach Frank, in many ways I wish he were still in College Park.  He has done wonders for the Vanderbilt program.  Ole Miss won the game at the end.

The Orioles were in a “Judgement Day” situation (again).  The Birds have spent the last few weeks from seeming to be on the verge of dropping from the playoff race.  They now trail the last Wild Card position by 3.5 games and are 5.5 games out of first.  This is an improvement and they need to stay this close and get a win streak going. The O’s needed to beat the Red Sox last night and did by a 3-2 nail biting score.

The Redskins were solid again last night in the preseason’s last game.  Pat White, former star at WVU, was an exciting quarterback for Washington.  I don’t think he will make the team, as it is very hard to unseat Rex Grossman for the 3rd qb spot.

The Redskins far outplayed the Tampa Bay Bucs on the field and the scoreboard with a 30 -12 win.

That brings us to the Terps who get started for real tomorrow at 12:30p.  The opponent is Florida International University (FIU).  Ranked 118 out of 120 NCAA teams.  The fired their long time coach after a 3-9 season.

Ron Turner (Norv’s brother) has taken over.  Their roster looks like Maryland in the first year that Edsall took over.  Many players have left on their own and several were asked to leave.  FIU is very young and inexperienced.

Maryland is young, but much more experienced and with a different level of athlete.  Terps are favored by 20.  A crowd of 35,000 is expected.  If you can not get there, you can watch on DirecTV channel 642.

Bruce and I will be on TerpTalk at 8AM on 1580am radio in DC (CBS Sports Radio) to discuss the game and the week that was in TerpLand.

For those in Baltimore, I look to be on the Sports Maven at 9AM on 1300am in Baltimore (CBS as well).
