Shawn Petty at QB for the Terps

Later today I am to be on ESPN 1300 out of Baltimore talking Terps football around 6:30pm and then again with “Stan the Fan” on TerpTalk Saturday morning at 8am.

The big news is that Shawn Petty, a freshman linebacker is the new starting QB for Maryland.

After losing all four qb’s to injury (and going back to last year, the total is five qb’s lost), we are down to guys who played QB in high school.  The backup QB to Shawn is a tight end.
Last year, Shawn was the star QB for Eleanor Roosevelt high school, a little bit south of College Park.  When he came up to UM, he went over to the defensive side full-time as a linebacker.
I have seen game film of Shawn, he is an option QB and here are my (short) notes after watching the film.
Impressive 7 on 7 work by Petty.  He looks quite large in stature compared to his wide receivers.  His left handed throwing motion seems a bit flat, but he can get the ball down the middle of the field as evidenced by the video.

Looking forward to seeing the option looks by the Terps on Saturday.  I think we can still get to six.  It would be a helluva journey to still get to a bowl.  Or we could end up 4-8.  Either way, it has been a remarkable season.

Here is a longer version of actual game film.  You may notice that ER lines up in the same type of offense that Navy and Georgia Tech use.  Shawn is a big QB, he can run over tacklers. If this was a few years ago, he may have been recruited at UM as a quarterback.  It reminds me of QB’s who played here under Jerry Claiborne in the late 70’s early 80’s.
