Final Four Without the Stars

Where have all the great basketball players gone? Last night’s game was exciting, but not nearly a classic. Butler has no field goals for 10 minutes down the stretch and almost wins the game.

There is a significant difference between exciting sports (game goes to the wire) and great basketball.

Unfortunately Haywood of Butler was not Larry Bird or Jimmy Chitwood (of Hoosiers fame). He had the bad call go against him on the drive to the basket where a clear blocking foul and three point play was called a charge. Then he has two chances to win the game and neither find the bottom of the net.

Today’s question is, where are the Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Juan Dixon, Clyde Drexler, Carmelo Anthony and the other transcendent players of years past?

As I watched the game last night, I couldn’t help but be sad of the condition of the sport. It has become mediocre at best. The game was reffed like an NBA contest and played by good but not great players.

Where have all the great players gone?

  1. I was telling JD pretty much exactly the same thing last night. Duke is a good college basketball team, however, as JD pointed out, WE beat them. I don't see them as the best team in the Country. Where is the team with 3 DOMINANT starters, with 2 role players, and 3 or 4 off the bench who start for most other teams?

    Fuzzy

  2. Totally..disagree. In the case of Butler, they have one good player, a team. It takes all of them to come together and they did. Nerves played apart. We are so used to watchng ACC bball, that runs up and down the floor like madmen. I for one thought it was refreshing to see good ole fashion bball where you had to work for every point you got. Could the Terps beat Butler..we will never know.

    A new butler fan…
