TerpTalk Last Night – Travis Garrison

I had the opportunity to do the Baltimore TerpTalk Show with Bruce and Travis Garrison last night.  It ended up being an almost one hour interview with Travis.  We discussed the book Travis authored, “Never Satisfied”.

Travis Garrison, McDonald’s All American basketball player from DeMatha.  He came to College Park on the heels of the Terps 2002 national championship.  He played for Maryland from fall of 2002 through spring of 2006.  A 6’8″ 230lb power forward for Gary Williams, he was more of a jump shooter than an inside banger.

When I first saw him play, it was the initial season at Comcast Center.  I remarked that one day soon, you would refer to this team as “Travis Garrison and the Maryland Terrapins”.  It felt like we had our own version of Chris Webber.  It was not to be that grand a stay in College Park for Travis.

Even though he was not a superstar, he was a great Terp.  He won an ACC Tournament Championship in 2004 and he hit the winning shot to take down #1 Florida in 2003.  There were bright moments.

He was not on TerpTalk to discuss basketball, rather it was to discuss his life and what he has learned in his 29 years.  Of course we asked questions about what it was like to play for Gary Williams or what happened with John Gilchrest (a once promising star of Terps hoops fame who left the team in 2005 after being the ACC Tournament MVP in 2004).

The interview was about life.  What are the turning points, what are the things young athletes need to know, how are the pressures of sports like the pressures of life.  It was a really good hour.  I will get the show posted later this week so that you can all hear the interview.

You can get the book on Amazon (click here for link) and we are looking forward to book signings by Travis in the DC area soon.
