Wayne and Freddy from Boca breakdown the Syracuse game

You can hear Freddy as our featured guest on TerpTalk and the Sports Maven

Freddy – The amazing thing is MD played lousy and nearly won. I think Syracuse ran out of gas late in the game.

Wayne – Syracuse was tired at the end.  They play very few guys and I think it will burn out the Orange before they win anything of
significance.

Freddy – As well as Seth (Allen) shot the ball, that’s how badly he handled the ball. 5 turnovers and zero assists for the point guard. I hope once and for all that Seth is a great point guard.

I have heard early in the season, “just wait till Seth comes back. The Terps will be better because he’s the point guard.”  Well, I have seen Seth for half of the season and he is a 2 guard in a point guard body.

Wayne – Seth is not a point guard and I fear that Melo is not really a point guard.  Roddy is a point guard and might be part of the three headed monster with Seth, Melo and Roddy.

Freddy – Chuck Mitchell. Borrow, buy or steal some hands. Basically a no show last night.

Wayne – I love Chuck.  He brings great energy and if paired with a real center, he can be a force. He has to be able to shoot from 12 feet and in to be on the floor with Dodd.

Freddy – Dez and Jake. Co-winners of the first half invisible man award. Nice second half for Dez.  Please tell Dez it’s a 40 min game not 20. Jake offered very little. One big 3 and then misses one out of 2 at the line when he had to make both for the Terps to win.

Wayne – Jake needs to have a bigger presence.  He is a defensive liability and to stay on the court needs to have an offensive impact. He could learn something from Evan Somtrycz on the rebounding end.

Dez is Dez.  For him to be really successful, he needs the ball. When he has the ball all time, others don’t get touches.  It is a tricky thing when you need one guy to score all the points.

Freddy – Faust – you hustle, take some shots without thinking and I wish when you dove for a loose ball with 2 min to go in the first half you would have called a t.o. rather the force a tough pass which created a turnover.

Wayne – Faust is a hot or cold type of player.  Love’em and hate’em as a fan.  He still has a big upside.  Just has not developed the way one would have liked.  He was bringing the defense against the Orange.

Freddy – Smo –  smo is slow, no d, lost his shot and should lose minutes.

Wayne – Smotrycz can rebound.  The shot is gone and he has the worst body language this side of Allen Iverson.  He can catch the ball and rebound.  Since Evan was hot in the first half versus UVA, he has fallen into a hole.

Freddy – MD does one thing really well….make bad passes when not being pressured by the defense. Someone asked Boeheim what Syracuse did to cause turnovers and he said we did nothing, MD did it all on their own

Wayne – Basically we had a bye week to be ready.  We did not look ready.  The offensive game plan would have been fine without the abundance of turnovers. I realize that Maryland is snake-bitten.  We only win when someone has a great game.

Freddy – The Terps had 6 days to figure out the zone. Turgeon said he felt great about his plan. 2 guys along the free throw line one of which was Mitchell. No one in the corners to shot the 3. No room for anyone to find a seam and penetrate.

Teams that have had success against the zone of Syracuse put one man just under the free throw line where that guy can shot, drive to the basket or drive and kick it out. Or… they let some one find a seam and penetrate. We have Mitchell around the line because….. his nice 13-14 ft shot? Because he passes so well? Or is it because he is explosive driving 14 ft to the basket?

Graham and Cleare…..there’s nothing to say other than neither are big time college players

Dodd. He made one of the very few good passes the Terps had last night.

The team isn’t coached well right now.  They make the dumbest mistakes every game. A very low basketball i.q.

And yet they almost won. Go figure.

Wayne – Thanks Freddy.
