Passion Runs Low for Terps

After a whiz-bang start to the season, it has been hard to keep the passion flowing around College Park for the football program.  A lackluster 28-3 win over Towson did not help.

Usually the tailgate gang rolls into the lot about 4 hours before the game.  Hey, it was a little rainy and cool, but it is a football Saturday.  I think you can see that at 11:45am on Saturday it was just us.  Look at all those empty spaces.  Let me remind you that they are all 100% pre-paid before the season starts.

Looking at the picture again, it looks like we might have been there on the wrong day.  So where are all the fans?  What happened to the “best uniforms in football” team spirit?

I really don’t know.  You would have to actually ask the other fans.  I do know what some of the folks who did show up (yes it was raining as usual in College Park on a football Saturday).

One refrain that I heard several times is the (paraphrase) “the team does not like the coach”.  A variation of that is that, “the team quit on Edsall” for the Temple game.  It seems to me that the fans also quit on the coach or team.

I am not sure what went wrong to this point.  You have to remind fans that in the end, the Terps won the game on Saturday.

Was I expecting a better record than 2-2 at this point?  Yes, 3-1 seemed right.  Even 4-0.

It was not that the guys lost, it was how pitiful the team looked for 6 quarters of football.  Until the 2nd half of the Towson game, our Terps looked really bad.

I thought that maybe Temple was a good team.  Then the Owls got whacked by Toledo.  So is Toledo a better football team then Maryland? Probably not, it hurts my football sensibility to think that we got stuffed by a so-so Temple team.

Also, the fans were sky-high after the Miami game and the Terps nationally televised fashion show.  Anything in America that goes up gets torn down.  We are now a fashion faux-pas.

So we really were cold, damp and disappointed on Saturday.  The defense looks weak, the offense disappeared and the special teams are not so special.  We still go to the games.  And we hope.

Terps Notes

Terps are at GT on Saturday.  Game is at 12p and is on TV.

Next week, Clemson game 10/15 is a 7p start and is on ESPNU.
