Terrapin Minute for Friday

Last week’s West Virginia football game was not a pretty one for the Terps.  That leaves the team’s record at 2-1 heading into the 12p game on Saturday hosting Florida International.

I was hoping that the Terps would have seized the moment and garner national attention with a win at top 25 ranked WVU.  The 31-17 loss pointed to some disorganized coaching and quite a few players who are playing in their first “real” games at the college level.

Terp Nation should still look for a win against FIU and then again hosting Duke next week (6p start).  As the season shapes up, 6 or 7 wins overall seems possible.  Quite a turnaround from lasts year’s 2-10 campaign.

However, the FIU contest could be a trap.  If the Terps get the expected win, then the season goes forward on schedule.  In the event of a loss on Saturday, the negative feelings of last year will be back.  Ralph’s job security will take a major hit, so this is a career game for Ralph and the staff.

Basketball Already?

Although it is 90 degrees here again in the Nation’s Capital, actually Rockville, it does not quite seem like fall.  Despite the warm temperatures autumn and basketball season are just around the corner.  Even though I am a football fan more so than basketball, there is the realization that Maryland is a basketball school.

Midnight Madness is on October 15th, this year a Friday.  The Terps have a great recruiting class and are hoping for even a great haul of new talent for the 2011 season.  If things break the right way for Gary Williams, he could be in pursuit of another chance at the national championship a few years down the road.
The last trophy from 2002 needs a companion before Gary retires.  As you may know, the court at Comcast Center will be updated with logos representing the 2002 natty.  Also, Gary is up for the Basketball Hall of Fame this year.
