A 40 point loss to Duke. Scored only 15 points in the 1st half. Down 60 to 20 at one point. On some level it does not matter that it was Duke. Biggest lose since 1944. Worst loss to Duke in 164 games.
By the way, I guess we really are not their rivals.
Wow. A slow, quite, sad wow. Sure it was only one game. If you are the coach and this was football it could be worse. Get beat by 6 touchdowns in a rivalry game and you may not have a job the next day.
I hope it gets better this season. The 20 year or so mark has been the kiss of death to legendary coaches like Denny Crum (Louisville) and Digger Phelphs (Notre Dame). Lefty Drisell had a 17 year run ended at Maryland for different reasons.
Whippings like this one got Matt Dougherty removed as UNC’s coach a few years ago. I know that this is no time to panic. We could win on Tuesday v BC. However, the way we got destroyed wil be remebered for a long time.
There were jokes posted online such as ‘what time do we start playing?’ and ‘I guess the team now has to take viagra to get up for Duke’. The topper was ‘Q: what does Coach K say to Gary when the game is over? A: Nice to see you Gary, when did you stop coaching?’
