Reflections on Last Night at Comcast Center

In the world of instant analysis, the Terps have stood pat in the court of public opinion. The refrain has crystallized to, “we need a point guard”.

The stasis in the court of public opinion is different than than of the basketball court. Maryland moved to 3-3 in the ACC and 15-4 overall with a 64-59 win over BC.

Was it pretty? No. Is there increased hope for the future games with Duke on Saturday and at Florida State before returning home on Feb 2nd to face Wake Forest? Not really.

Dez Wells may have to play point forward, but he commits a lot of turnovers. Nick Faust may have to play extended minutes as the lead guard, but has trouble bringing the ball up the court under pressure. Pe’Shon Howard seems to have forgotten how to play aggressively. All the answers seem to come with severe side-effects.

I do think that over time Mark Turgeon will figure it out and get the right pieces in place.

Last night Alex Len played 31 minutes, had 16 points and 13 rebounds. He kept Maryland in the game until Jake Layman, the vaunted freshman, made a key basket. Down the stretch Nick Faust and Dez Wells played well enough for the Terps to win.

This is still a flawed team that is learning on the fly. The overall basketball IQ seems lower than the talent level. Great guys, fantastic athletes, not the best basketball players in the world.

All in all, the Terps won the game. We had a good time covering last nights event, take a look at the video
