Rivalry Week On Basketball

It is called rivalry week on ESPN. After an early game of Syracuse @ UConn and the nightcap is Carolina @ Duke.

These games are hyped as the biggest rivalry since Roe v Wade. The Carolina Duke game is at a much higher level than any other game I have seen this year. Both teams are really good. The Tar Heels have two NBA guards and last year’s player of the year.

Duke is a good college team, with maybe one real NBA player in Gerald Henderson. Still they are consistently the best college program over the last 20 years.

Over at Maryland, hopes are sky high that the Terps will land the #1 recruit in the land. Lance Stephenson aka Born Ready is the recruiting target.

Stephenson, from Brooklyn, is still looking at hometown St Johns as well as Louisville. It is seeming to come down to the Terps and Red Storm.

The interesting twist is the apparent involvement of UnderArmor in getting Born Ready to the Terps. For those who follow college sports, the influence that Nike has had is immense. This especially true with UNC with Michael Jordan and Oregon with Nike founder Phil Knight.

The Stephenson battle is now viewed by many as a UA v Nike. It really is rivalry week.
