Too Much Passion?

I really care about the Terps (scratch that, not strong enough).  Everyone who knows me, realizes that I am a big Terps fan (nope, still not enough but closer).

The passion of “being a Terp” is a defining characteristic of my existence.

OK, that’s a a good start.

From about 1978 through today I have been a Terp.  Maryland edged out the Redskins to be my #1 team.

I go to the games, buy the tickets, donate to the Terrapin Club, Friends of Maryland Basketball, Maryland Gridiron Network, Alumni Association, buy the clothes, etc.

My work travel schedule is formed around the football and basketball schedule.  I will lose a business deal over going to a game.  I have missed a friend’s wedding over a game.

In my mind, I really care about the University and the teams.

Is it possible to care too much, yes (I guess so).  Is it beyond reason to still be yelling (or as some call it “screaming”) when you are down by 20 points in the second half of a game in which your entire team looks like beaten dogs.  According to those who live with me, “yes” (Or as they might put it, “shut up, the game is over”).

I can’t put it away.

I don’t need to have the teams win all the time.  I do want them (all of them, most of the time) exhibit the effort that I would put out if I had the great fortune to be on that field or court.

Sure there are days it won’t be so great.  In those times, I want hope and effort.

Sometimes the G-ds of sport will shine upon us and we will be in the Orange Bowl or the Final 4.

I get it that it is not (yet) the Terps year in Men’s Basketball.  I hope the team gets better and grows over the balance of the season.  A few game win streak would certainly help.

I will calm down and let the season play out.  It’s not like I or my fellow fans have a choice.
