What a Weekend! An Amazing 24 Hours!

By late afternoon on Friday we had learned that James Franklin was headed to Vanderbilt to be their head football coach, leaving the head coach in waiting position at Maryland.  We had also learned that Donavan McNabb was benched as the Redskins quarterback.

Then it got really interesting in the DC sports market. By Saturday Ralph Friedgen was, in effect, going to be fired as the football coach at Maryland.  Then, one time mega-star Gilbert Arenas was traded from the Wizards to Orlando and the controversial Mike Leach was going to be the next head football coach at Maryland.

All within about 24 hours and the Redskins had yet to play the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

An amazing amount of activity for what looked to be a slower sports weekend.

As of this writing, it appears that Maryland is going to ask Mike Leach to be the head football coach.  It also appears, according to sources, that the Terps will extend an offer to Mike Locksley to join the football staff as the defacto head recruiter.  Locks, as he is known, may be the best recruiter in the nation.  He currently is the head coach at New Mexico State.

Locks was at Maryland and was the head recruiter for LaMont Jordan and Shawn Merriman among others.  He was the head recruiter for Florida.  He then went to Illinois as the offensive coordinator and they went to the Rose Bowl.

I do not think that Maryland will make any public statement about Leach until Ralph either retires, accepts the buyout or moves to another position within the university.  We look for that announcement mid-day on Monday.
