Al Gore Invented What? – On the Lady Terps

On Tuesday afternoon I did not feel well. After a weekend of too much basketball and work, I was at a meeting until way too late on Monday night. Now I was paying for it.

Usually after I pick up the kids from school, I get more work done at home in an one hour than in a few hours at the office. Not today. I was headed for a headachy nap.

Just before 7p, Jordan came in and said, “Daddy its time for Maryland”. Somewhat dazed, I thought the season ended on Saturday with a loss to Memphis. But he did not mean that Maryland team. He was talking girl’s basketball and the NCAA tournament.

I had actually told them they might get to go to the game. It was played in College Park. But I was too tired to go anywhere. So my two boys were geeked up to see the girls play on ESPN. Jordan had the hockey game on one channel and ESPN2 on the other, so he could flip back and forth with ease.

The fact that three males were going to watch a girl’s basketball is stunning enough. I think that might be a column in its own right.

The game was not on at 7p. ESPN said 7:21p was tip time. So they started with (hated) UConn hosting Florida. Jordan went with hockey, Caps @ Maple Leafs. At 10 years of age, he knows most of the Caps players by jersey # and can almost perform hockey play-by-play.

At 7:20p Jordan was back on channel 209 wondering how ESPN2 screwed this up, no Terps! Mason went to get his notebook computer. I asked “why”? Jordan explained that the game was on “Al Gore’s Fabulous InterWeb”. Ok that’s my interpretation. He just said Internet.

I responded with “No, just the men’s games at cbs.sportsline”. He looked at me like I didn’t know what I was talkin’ about. That’s because I didn’t. The moral of the story is don’t mess with Jor, he knows of what he speaks.

The game was on ESPN360, which the two of them got working in short order. I got involved to press the “full screen” button and bingo-whamo the Maryland v Utah game was there in living color. Off went the hockey game.

Like a bad Norman Rockwell painting (closer to dogs playing poker) the gang of three sat on the bed and watched a notebook computer. It was a little herky-jerky, but pretty good.

Once again, Jordan knew all the players for Maryland. He knows more minutiae than I do. That is saying a lot. Maryland beat Utah and is in the Sweet 16. I have to go ask Jor to find out where and when the next game is.
