I really like hockey. Deck (floor) hockey with my kids in the basement is our sport of choice. We play more hockey than basketball lately.
There is nothing better than playoff hockey. The Canadian national anthem as performed in Vancouver is worth watching on YouTube.
Looking at the Olympic hockey tournament, my biggest complaint is that it does not go on long enough. It is hard to get a good feel for the teams in a two-week travel tournament.
Interestingly, countries with tiny populations are dominating the tournament once again. Let’s take a look at Canada, the population about 30 million, Sweden population of about 9.6 million and Finland with a population of approximately 6 million.
According to Google, there are almost 6 million persons in the DC metroplex metro area.
Being and American, when I think of the other countries in the tournament, I don’t see in my mind little countries. I don’t think about it. If you spend some time on the idea, you can certainly understand why it is such a big deal to beat the USA and Russia (143 million).
Last time in Vancouver, Canada won the gold, USA Silver and Finland Bronze. In 2014, the Sochi games have Canada with the Gold, Sweden Silver and Finland Bronze.
Team Finland (Nicknamed The Lions) is certainly the little engine that could.
