It doesn’t take a genius to know that the moral of the Maryland Basketball fanbase is very low right now. Despite a talented team, there is little to no faith that this particular Maryland team is capable of winning the big game when it matters. Anyone who reads the message boards can tell you one thing, the fans need a big win to change the narrative.
Nebraska isn’t a big win, but it is a significant one. Nebraska is #24 right now in the AP poll and gives the fanbase a needed boost. Right things aren’t good in College Park, the attendance is dismal through ten games. Only three home games have crossed the 13,000 in attendance mark (and that’s on paper, eyewitness accounts tell a more bleak story). Simply put, the feeling of being at Xfinity Center is currently off in a negative way. The fan support that was once one of the best in the country is dwindling.
Last night I was talking to an older Maryland alumni who is attending his first game of the season tonight. I bought him two tickets for a grand total of $8, after buying them I said “The glory days of Maryland basketball are over” to which he replied “You never ever lived them”. He is right, I was born in 2001, the next year Maryland basketball peaked. Since then we have not been the same program. In my memory I have only seen flashes of what this proud program should be, in 2010 I saw a great season that ended in the second round. In 2015 and 2016 I saw a brief run fueled by Melo Trimble that some say channeled the days of old, but other than I that all I’ve seen is a shell of a program.
I’m not saying that changes in leadership need to be made at this moment. However if this season continues the way it is trending then we all need to evaluate the direction that we are heading.
