Tonight is the Night

On Tonight’s Game vs. BC

If it is going to happen, it will be tonight. It is time for the bounceback game after the 40 point loss to Duke on Saturday. It already seems like that game was a long time ago. Much wringing of hands in Terpland and unrepeatable epithets were repeated over that loss.

There is a lot of pressure on the team and Gary (Williams) to get it going tonight. In the snow and ice we have the heat of a must win game. There are a lot of questions riding on tonight.

If it is going to happen… can Geveis still score? Will Eric Hayes look scared? Can Adrian Bowie foul out with five charges? Is there any playing time for 6’10” freshman Steve Goins? I see a redemptive win for the Terps. BC is still Tyrese Rice and 4 other guys. And the four other guys are not as good as they were the past few years.

Other Basketball Notes

Two things here this afternoon. (1) I saw Oklahoma and Oklahoma State play last night on TV. Wow do they look fast. Contrasting that with our team speed, my do we look slow.

(2) Basketball and academics collided a few years ago over the graduation rate, which was rated by the NCAA as zero. They have their own way of figuring the statistic and it does not mean that no Terps graduated from the univeristy. It means no one graduated in 4 years.

So, the story goes, that there were meetings and decisions were made as to who was going to be “let in” to play hoops. My take was that no execeptions were to be allowed. The result is that we are not going after any ‘one and done’ players. We are only targeting players who have strong academics and solid families. There are no risky students on the team.

This is great if you think that we are looking for an all-academic team. Many folks want a winning team. Maybe basketball should be a major field of study at Maryland.

I was watching Memphis at Univeristy of Tennessee on Saturday. Bobby Maze wanted to come to Maryland to play for Gary. He had questionable academics at the junior college he attended. He could not get into our fine academic institution. Bobby is the starting point guard for Tennessee this year, his first year with the Volunteers.

  1. Nice blog Wayne!! How about a little props to your boy and mine, Moises Fokou, the former Frostburg State Bobcat, a last minute addition to the senior bowl roster. Maybe he can get picked up late in the draft or at least catch on for a tryout with somebody this summer.

I am afraid Maryland simply has become too much of an academic school to compete with the elite athletic programs in both football and now basketball. Say it ain’t so Mr. Viener!!!!!!

    Carolina Refs!!!!!!!! Take Care buddy
