Why Does it Always Happen to Us? Postgame BC v Terps

An improbable finish for any other team is par for the course of Maryland sports.  The Terps find a way to blow a 4th quarter lead as BC hits a second try at a 52 yard field goal for the game winner.

Randy Edsall called a timeout on the first attempt of the field goal by Freese, an attempt that sailed wide left. I don;t know any fan that saw the first timeout.  Many (all?) thought the game was going to OT tied at 26.

It took a few seconds for order to be restored.  Then Edsall did not call timeout as the play, the 2nd attempt at the kick was successful for BC.

This all transpired just a few seconds after Edsall called timeout with 44 seconds left when BC was backed up deep in its own territory on a 3rd and 4.  The resulting play was a long run by Williams to the Maryland 37.  Soon after, the game was over and Maryland falls to 6-5 on the season.

How can you count the ways over the past few years that the ball always seems to bounce the wrong way for the Terps revenue sports?  To make this rant work, you have to exclude last week’s win at VT.

It was a bummer for the last ACC game.  Maryland media guys, usually pretty sharp did not do the best in looking back at all the Terp highlights in ACC play.  Of course, in recent years there have been quite a few low lights as well.

Tonight was no different, another lowlight – but at least it was interesting.

Actually for football, it is the breaks that go the wrong way.  Broken promises as James Franklin seems to be the coach that got away.  Broken quarterbacks last season, everyone else this year.

As with some recent games, Maryland made a boatload of errors. Whether is a fumble by freshman Jacquille Veii at the seven yard line or the wrong timeouts at the worst time with Randy – the Terps had it go wrong on Saturday evening.

The usually stout defense gave up big plays on the ground to Andre Williams, the ACC’s first ever 2,000 yard rusher and in the air as a tripped up defensive back led to a wide open receiver to cap a 93 yard late game drive.

The game featured a 2 point blocked extra point return by Anthony Nixon (#20) to tie the game at 26 following the long td pass.

Its not really a lost season, as getting six wins out of this bunch is pretty good.  The NC State game gives the Terps a reason to think it could be a 7 win regular season.   It is just the pain of losing another winnable game and extending a inglorious habit of dropping games under the current regime where Maryland had a 4th quarter lead.
