An Ending (not about sports)

What do you say when something ends? But all good things come to an end. I had an ending the other day that did not have to do with sports.

My sister-in-law, Barby, had some cool parents. Because Bob (brother) & Barby lived in the same town (Hagerstown) as I did when I was growing up, we saw them often. Barby’s parents (Lee & Dorothy) came to visit from Baltimore on many weekends.

Over the years that I have known Lee and Dorothy, I have really regarded them as part of the family. A warm reminder of more innocent times. They were there at holidays, at my Bar Mitzvah, wedding, baby namings and so on. Folks that you see on those occasions when you are happy.

You don’t realize the time that goes by. Suddenly, in a way that you can only understand when it happens to you, it dawns on you that 30+ years have gone by. You have known these people for over thirty years!

I have not been to Hagerstown nearly as much, my parents moved to Boca. I moved to the city and have children now. Bob and Barb still live there.

We still have events in Hagerstown. The folks who were the family elders are now in the eighties and nineties. The older folks don’t come to family events as much. They are too infirm to travel, can’t drive on their own, etc.

I always liked Lee. He was a kind man who had interesting stories. He owned a shoe store in Baltimore. Barby, her sister Sharon, Dorothy and Lee seemed to make such a nice family. They really stayed together.

Dorothy and Lee were married for about 70 years. On Saturday, at the wise, old age of 90 years, Lee Livov passed on. Another little bit of my past ended with him. He will be missed.

My condolences to Dorothy, Barby, Sharon, Bob, and grandchildren Geoff, Aaron and Jamie.
