Football Friday #2 and more tennis

Football Friday starts off with Duke v Terps men’s soccer.  Tonight, maybe for the last time in a regular season game, Maryland plays arch rival Duke in soccer.  This is a game that has historically had Ludwig Field packed and rocking.

For those that have not been to a Terp soccer match, this is the one to go to.  The best fans Maryland has are the soccer fans.  Every game, no matter the weather, the “Crew” as they are known, put on a great fan show.

I will cover the game for TerpTalk and there will be video on CapitalSportsBlog.  Things get rolling at Ludwig at 7:00PM tonight.

As we get back to football, one of the better kickoff events takes place this afternoon. TerpTalk sponsor and friend Ed Kelly host their annual Kickoff party.  Ed is with Meyer Consulting Engineers in Rockville.  Ed and his company put on a tailgate party / football bash on the Friday that is closest to the start of the NFL season.  Customers, office mates and the like rock their favorite jersey.  There is an actual tailgate party in the parking lot and the office is decorated in jerseys (both pro and college).

Hilarie Viener has her US Open Tennis column up on the US Open tab.  We will have to find something for Hilaire to write about once the Open is over.

Now on to football at Maryland.  Tomorrow afternoon the Monarchs of Old Dominion come to Byrd Stadium.  Maryland is a big favorite.  ODU can really put up some offensive numbers.  Their quarterback, Taylor Heinicke’s story is familiar to most ODU fans. As it was written on the ODU Blitz webiste – He broke numerous passing records at Collins Hill High outside Atlanta and had no scholarship offers until ODU quarterbacks coach Ron Whitcomb called. Undersized at just less than 6-foot, he broke into the lineup as a true freshman when Thomas DeMarco went down with an injury. He’s been ODU’s starter ever since.

As a sophomore, he set a Football Championship Subdivision record with 5,076 passing yards and won the Walter Payton Award as the best player in FCS.
The Terps defense is going to have some work to do tomorrow.
Next week the Terps are at UCONN for a 7:30p game on ESPNU and then WVU comes to Baltimore.  The game time for that one will be announced by Monday.
