Lacrosse Update
Boys’ Latin senior attackman-midfielder Colin Heacock, ranked the No. 20 recruit in the nation according to Inside Lacrosse, has orally committed to Maryland.
Heacock was a longtime Penn State recruit before decommitting in early November. He visited and was in discussions with multiple schools before deciding on the Terps.
Heacock’s addition to Maryland’s Class of 2013 gives it another player ranked in the Top 50, including four Top 50 attackmen in Matt Rambo (No. 1), Tim Rotanz (No. 3) and Connor Cannizzarro (No. 7). All are talented enough to push for time on either attack or midfield.

By the way, there still is no official schedule for the 2013 season.
Men’s Soccer
Finished 3rd in the final poll of the season. Still disappointing to finish so close to a national championship.
Women’s Bball
After all the injuries, three players out with ACL’s, the team continues to be highly ranked. Maryland is ranked 9 and 10 in the two major polls.
After an upcoming trip to Delaware, the Terps host a Holiday tournament. Then they start off in January at #19 N Carolina. This is an 18 game ACC schedule that features Duke coming to CP on Sunday February 24th at 3p
Men’s Bball
One of the season’s issues is going to be strength of schedule or SOS. Since we are playing a lackluster early season schedule and the ACC teams are not highly ranked, it may be hard to pull our SOS up too far.
This chart is from the Ken Pomeroy website, http://kenpom.com. Last year Maryland finished with a SOS of 54, this year our SOS is currently at 331 out of 347 teams. The good news is that overall the Terps are ranked 58.
The reason that SOS is important is that it is a factor at the end of the season when we look to go to the NCAA tournament. A low SOS does not bode well if we are a bubble team or want to be highly seeded.
Maryland got a verbal from the #59 player in the class of 2014 – Melo Trimble. Terps are starting to load up with local talent. And I don’t think that Mark Turgeon and his gang are done yet. I expect one more guard to sign-up from the 2014 class. Maybe highly sought after Dion Wiley or Phil Booth.
I am thinking that for the 18 game regular season ACC schedule that the Terps can get between 11 and 13 wins. Add that to the expected 12-1 record before conference play and one gets at least to 23-8. Not a bad record in Turgeon’s second season in College Park.
Big East to Dissolve and Reform?
It looks like the Big East is done as an all-sports conference. Will it just move on as a basketball conference? What will the 7 basketball-only (actually non-football) schools call themselves. What happens to the football schools?
Seems like UConn get left holding the bag as they are not part of the 7 schools sticking together and really have nowhere to go as far as a conference at the moment.
The conference re-alignment game continues.
