The spring game for the Terps is on Saturday. The temperature should be in the mid-80’s by game time.
How do you know it is spring in Washington? The Capitals are out of the playoffs, the Nationals are in last place, the Redskins are the talk of the league, Gilbert Arenas is practicing hard for next season by sitting on a bench in a three piece suit, and finally, the weather has been nice for a day or two.
Now back to Terps football.
Last night the football team opened its doors and arms to the MGN (Maryland Gridiron Network). MGN is the booster organization for Terps football.
There was a brief introduction by Ralph Freidgen. That was followed with a “chalk talk” by James Franklin (offense) and Don Brown (defense) along with Coach Bankins on Special Teams.
The rules for being in the meeting is that one can not report what was said about players, injuries, or opponents. I will tell you that it is always revealing to hear the updates directly from the coaches. As a long-time Terps fan, I appreciate that Maryland allows this type of access.
All of the coaches were very impressive. Coach Franklin could sell ice to an Eskimo in a straight forward, Ralph Friedgen kind of way. The more time you spend with him, the better you understand why he is the coach in waiting at Maryland.
I am, personally, in the tank for Coach Brown. I first met him the day after he was hired. He was the long-time head coach at UMass. He is also, in the Friedgen mode, a quietly confident, straight forward guy.
Coach Brown is in charge of the defense. From his comments and more importantly what the other coaches said, Coach Brown has the defense cookin’.
All the talking was followed up by pizza and some quality hanging out. Yes, the Caps game was on the flat screen. More proof of springtime right in front of your own eyes.
