Tough Sports Weekend

It was a tough weekend for my teams.

A bit of a lackluster start to the weekend was the Friday night game, Terps basketball against Indian University of Pennsylvania.  Terps win 73-61, but it did not have the impact that I was expecting.  The freshmen Charles Mitchell and Seth Allen were good, 15 rebounds for the power forward and 16 pts, 5 assists and 5 steals for Allen at point guard.

I was looking for more from Shaq Cleare and Alex Len. Both could get serious minutes at center.  Neither were impressive.  But hey, its the first game and we have a big one against Kentucky on Friday at 8:30p.

Terps Football

Saturday, after the Show (actually did the regular slot at 8a on 1580AM and then did a slot on 1300AM at 9a), the Terps had a must win at home with Georgia Tech.

Today’s fun fact is that Maryland played the only two CFA (College Football Alliance) schools that do not have “University” in their name.  Boston College and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Hopes were high that the cobbled together offense led by linebacker turned quarterback Shawn Petty would somehow get enough points to beat GT who was having an off year.

The Terps were playing in front of a dwindling number of fans

I guess the offense was ok, did not get a first down until late into the 2nd quarter and only crossed mid-field on the last drive of the 1st half.  It was the defense, the same defense that I was talking up all week, that failed.

GT seemed to run on my beloved Terps at will.  In fact they only threw four passes all game.  It was 20 to nothing before Maryland has anything going.

Eventually Shawn got the offense in gear as Stefon Diggs had two pretty good touchdown receptions both emblematic of his year.  The first was from about 20 yards out where he caught the ball in the middle of the field and made defenders miss until Diggs could stretch into the end zone.  The second was on the last play of the game as Petty threw the ball as far as he could from around the GT 45 yard line and the Diggs out jumped the defender in the right corner of the end zone.

All-in-all, GT 33, Terps 13 was not as close as the score indicated.

Redskins

It is getting bad fast for the burgundy and gold.  Now at 3-6, the ‘Skins were dominated again in game in which they had zero turnovers.  This time by a 1-6 Carolina Panthers team.  It has gotten to the point that in the 4th quarter, you just turn-off the game and find something else to do.

Jordan asked,  “What happened to the feeling we had at the Vikings game when we just knew we were going to win?”  I don’t know where that went, it was cool while it lasted.  Now we just expect that it is not going to go the Redskins way.

I have a bigger question, how long are the Redskins going to hang on to Mike Shanahan?  Never a crowd favorite, you have to figure if this is still a rebuilding project, is Mike your guy?  I think Zorn has a much better record in Washington than does Shanny.

Maryland Women’s sports

I admit, for the first time ever I switched back and forth between the Field Hockey final (#7 Terps @ # 1 UNC) during the Redskins game.  Maryland got down 2-0 and did not really catch up.  The Terps will be a force in the 16 team NCAA tournament.

I was surprised that the Littles were into the field hockey.  I guess they are just great Terps.
